Those guys will be in my neck of the woods next month, want me to ask them?

I think its just 3d scan tuned into a sculpt model that sends out an stl to the bad ass 5 axis laser machines.

That's the way I would do it, not that hard really.

i don't understand what he means by 'black areas'
are the objects scanned, reproduced polygonally, and UV mapped?
are the textures basically bump maps/ height maps?

i suspect if the product is scanned, reproduced polygonally, and UV mapped there would be a larger area given over to the parts that need to be lazered and the rest reduced in size to reduce the pixels they inhabit, therefore less head movement
or something :)

So this is the process of texturing a surface (in the real physical world) via lasers to produce very "high frequency" texture patterns? Right?
