Hey hey. I'm fairly pleased how this is progressing so far, a few mesh errors to fix and some more details to add before starting on the materials/textures.

I've not done that much in max before, and that's where I think I'm going to struggle - I'm not so good with the material editor!

For the moment there isn't going to be an interior - need to get the outside right first, and as I get a bit lost with materials that's still a way off.

As for mesh errors, there's really only one in particular that stands out in a full res render, by the co-axial mg. I got lazy and used the boolean modifier which has created some truly horrid topology that I need to fix. The offending item shown below.

delete all those lines then remake them on multiple verts? that would turn like 16 triangles into 18 quads and 3 dodecahedrons. (the poor quad next to it)

Thanks Joey that seems to do the trick. I need to remember not to go overboard with the polys sometimes.

My main concern is the materials/lighting now. I'm ok with shiny metals and glass, getting something that looks decent for the tank hull I'm finding much harder. Using bump and spectacular maps I've got the following, but I'm not really sure where to go from here.

Well, I have a broad understanding of what most of the effects will do, I know how to texture, I just can't put it all' together to come up with something that looks any good. In fact, I hardly know where to start! :'(

Hiya. As for the lighting, I nearly always use a single target spot, with nice sharp shadows, then fill in the rest of the light with one environmental light. Maybe with an HDRI in the environmental light to supply a bit of colour and mood. Or just adjust the light colours.

For texturing, I generally just use a tileable map for most things. I'm a bit of a noob at texturing. But i'll suppliment these with reflection maps, bumps / displacement maps etc to get the material looking really nice and use the uvw mapping to align / repeat / etc to get it all looking right. Mainly make these in photoshop. I hope to learn to learn unwrapping shortly. I get some nice results sometimes so these methods are ok I find.
