symmetry modifer

I'm trying to model my first object and am using symmetry modifier.
My question is how do I "join" one side to the other, without going through every edge and welding them together, its just that if I move verts on the symmetry line after I've collapsed the stack, only one side will move and tear a hole in a seemingly "one piece" object
I've checked "weld seams" but this doesn't weld the seams

you need to up the threshold then of the weld seams. With the symmetry mod, you should be able to apply it, get the control gizmo to just right (both sides nearly touching) and then it should weld the verts...

After that you can apply an EP mod to it and it should be one object.

If you are worried it's not you can apply the "SPL" "SNF" (some mod with 3 letters) that will check for errors in your mesh...

Thanks, the threshold thing seems to have sorted it but out of interest, I couldn't find the modifiers you talk about, are they abbreviations of something?
