SubD on Cylinder issue - modeling an RPG
show user profile  TheShrike
Hi all, I am try to improve my SubD skills and am having an issue here with the fins on the bottom of this RPG round. In the first picture you can see what I am going for. The second picture shows the fins on my model, and I tried chamfering the edges I wanted to stay together on the left. The fin to the right of that one is unchamfered. In the last picture, the smoothed result, you can see how the arrows point to crappy ridges that I would love to be gone, but if I add support edges all across the vertical span of the model, where the fins are, it ruins the cylinders roundness when it subdivides... Does anyone know how I can solve this issue?

one way would be to check on 'smooth by smoothing groups' in the meshsmooth/ turbosmooth

Thank you both, but Grotey, are the extra verticals above the fin creating a distortion in the smoothing of the cylinder? It is hard for me to tell from this video, but it seems like whenever I add extra loops along the height of the cylinder, when it smoothes it messes up the perfect roundness.

he want's it crisp like in the ref i think- hard edges no round ones
the missile doesn't have round 'fins' usually
just do what garp did before he rounded things off

You can see it on that tiny reference?
Crisp version then:
