It's been years since I have posted here... But this one has me stumped. Mental Ray Translucent Ocean
show user profile  organic II
Hello All! Good to see that some of the same ol' folks are still around here. Its been a while.

Ok, so here is my issue. I need to create an ocean material that has realistic tropical translucency.
It needs to cover two underwater zones. The shore, reef type area and then the drop off. So essentially the translucency needs to go from teal and tropical in the shallow areas and dark blue and deep ocean looking after the drop off.

Wow! lucky you! Did you dive the reefs at all? I am a reef fanatic so I am pretty jealous.

Also, they didnt mention anything about mental ray and the water down there did they? EMB

If you're using mental ray, couldn't you use one of the physical materials to simulate this (volume shader or SSS)?

Jeff Patton has a sample scene using the Lume shader that gives water like this. Might be worth a look

Sorry to disappoint. We did a lot of snorkelling, but no scuba diving. There was so much underwater life to see so close in, plus i'm not that keen on deep water! :)

Heres a link to my photo, its taken on the left side of your aerial photo...

Hey, no worries. good to see you're still about too! If I remember, the settings in max have changed enough that you need to fiddle with a few settings to get that scene to render correctly.

On the max samples DVD that comes with max, there is a MR scene which is water like this. I don't know if this will do what you need with the colors though.

Good luck!

It's all in the sea bottom Imo. Get a decent procedural /bitmap for that, water itself is easy.

Cheers,

Manolo
