Studio Lighting
show user profile  Landia
Hello. I need lots of help on creating a studio lighting. I got the background to look the way I want but the red paint on the teapot is not looking so good. The red paint should be really shiny and red. But the red paint on the teapot seems really faded or dull looking. The red paint should really pop out at you. There is not much shinny white reflection either to make the paint look really reflective.

I am using vray lights and HDR bitmap for reflection. Here is the picture of the red paint teapot.

As you can see, the red paint looks washed out or faded or even frosted.

I can even send the original max file with the HDR bitmap to someone if you like. Let me know. Thanks!

Your lights are too dark. Crank them and see what happens. Will make the background whiter, which will look better/cleaner.

Lots of variables. You got to tweak the lighting, the material gloss, reflection falloff, camera F stop, shutter speed, hdr... I had a link to a good tutorial but the link's dead now.

Im actually a fan of the mental ray light rig that comes in the sample files. I just swapped out the lights for Vray lights and it works a treat!

Where do you go to use the mental ray light rig that comes in the sample files?

When you say swap, do you mean delete the mental ray lights and create a new vray lights? Or select all the mental ray lights and somehow change them to vray lights?

That look really nice! I will try and find the file later today. Have you try to render it with car paint or chrome material. I work with really reflective surfaces like car paint and polished metal like chrome.

Also, when you add the vray light, what are the adjustments you made to make it look so great? Did you just adjust the INTENSITY of each light to like 35 or higher number?

I think if i remember rightly i just adjusted the intensity until the renders looked similar.

I just did a quick test render with a car paint and chrome material. This is still mental ray but you get an idea of how the light will bounce. Standard MR car paint material and A&D Chrome.

Very science fiction movie looking. LOL!

The mental ray is very nice looking. Is there much of a difference between mental ray vs vray? Because mental ray look just as good as vray to me.

I just tried to replace all the 3 mental ray lights with vray lights but it did not work. When I delete the mental lights, it deleted the whole thing, the stand. When I tried to UNGROUP the stand so I can delete just the mental ray light, there is a small ball connected to the mental ray light.

Can you email me the file with the vray lights? What is your email address? Thanks!

The MR Rig you can just delete the lights out straight away.
If youre going unitless then 3 is about the same intensity as the mr rig.

Here is a link to the vray rig

Thanks for the file!

When I rendered the image, it is very blue color and very grainy. There must be something wrong with the file? Or did you do any other adjustments to the scene?

I am using the mental ray rig and it is pretty nice looking. My only question about the paint is how do I make a Red paint? When I use the color control to red, it look like pink when I render it. No matter how much red I put or adjust, it still looking pink.

Anyone know how to make a red car paint? Thanks!
