Steampunk Stuff
show user profile  herfst1
I'm making a steampunk babe (almost done) and I thought I'd make a steampunk bike for her to lean against. I probably will make a steampunk background as well (maybe a boiler and some pipes and gears and stuff, dunno yet).

So I think I'm 99% done modeling the bike. Here's some pics.

[edit] Just saw an error in my logic for the crank gear on the back axle. C'est la vie.

Like it! Engine block could do with splitting into a few more different elements. Needs more rivets!

nice start! Handle bars look like they could use some support though (and they seem a bit too thick). I like it though as well!

I LOVE the piston driving the back wheel instead of a chain, very 'Stepenson's Rocket'.

Needs a smokestack somewhere too. :D

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I'm really enjoying making this model. I've actually been spending time today rigging it all up to work properly just for the fun of it.

I've also fixed up that engine block a bit, thanks Mike. Still will work some more on the front fork. Might also put a front suspension on it.

P.S. That's a cool pic BattleMetalChris, don't think I've seen that before. I'm going to have to find a spot to put that flared exhaust, it's too cool not to use.

I love the design :)
Maybe a chimney-exhaust, with all the little leaf shapes, like above...
And yeah, more rivets!

More rivets, and an exhaust. Also all rigged, not that you can tell, might make an animation when it's all done.

Here's a quick render with some maps. Will work on it some more later, must finish the chick now.

Too shiny. I prefer my steampunk stuff gritty and dark, like it's been driven through muddy, smoke clogged streets where orphans run around in filthy rags begging for coppers.

Really nice modelling though - the rims on the wheel look a bit too melted.

Yep, agree about the paint. I just chucked some temporary materials on it as a test, will definitely rough it up for the final.

I'll look at the rims, see what I can come up with. Thanks for the crit.

Maybe some big brass instruments attached to the handlebars?

Which of course will need a steam supply from the main boiler resembling the bastard offspring of a kettle heater-element and a crazy straw ;-)

Also, I wonder if it would help capture the era by making the saddle more resemble a horse saddle?

Yeah, the overall feel is a bit too futuristic, uniform and machined in my opinion.

Go for less symmetry, more mechanical DIY maintenance, plated metal repair jobs. And definitely make the saddle more horse-like in nature! :)

Also, show us the babe?

Good start.
I'm not liking the rims though. They seem to modern. I would think steam punked would be several pieces riveted together. So the ring would be one piece and then the spokes would be riveted to the ring. Something heavy and cumbersome. 4 spokes that are thick and the ring to be much thicker and looks like it's iron.
Also, the frame is cool with the middle part where the tank normally is, but the rest of it seems really thin and fragile. Beef it up and instead of welds at the cross points, have everything rivet together,

Not to sound harsh, but right now it looks like a theme bike from orange county choppers instead of a true steam punked bike.
