SteamPump design USB, what do you think?
show user profile  bratok
Hi guys,
A friend of mine had showed me the "SteamPump" USB that he had designed.

So I, also being a designer by sole, came up with some, possibly even more fascinating, concepts in my head.
Now the question is, how do you think it would be possible to get some material value, so to say, from such designs? Finding someone who would craft this things and selling them online? Considering that the end price would be somewhat from 100 to 200$ , do you think someone would buy them?

Maybe someone has some experience in that field?

I personally would be really surprised if somebody would pay that much for them, which is a shame, as they are hand-made, and are pretty cool to look at.

I think people might be prepared to pay for something a little more substantial. Keeping it computer related maybe a headset, or a set of speakers. Obviously these would cost even more to make as they are bigger.

$100 - $200 for a usb stick? No no, you'll appeal to a very small demographic, the rest of the world will go function over fashion and get ordinary ones for about 10x cheaper.

After you buy something like this it would be a shame to actually carry it around on a key chain, use it, possibly loose it or damage it.
So I would buy it purely for the sake of owning it. So... perhaps USB stick is not the best choice.
How about something a tad bigger, which would stay indoors on a shelf or the table?

Wow, your friend certainly has had a lot of exposure for his invention.

Apple users will buy anything if it's shiny enough, so there's your market.

Being someone who love things of the past, I think it looks pretty sweet! Nice render! :-)

And here comes the early version of my design. In the best traditions of SteamPunk ( thanks mrgrotey ), it also has a furnace that fires up when the device is in use. ;)

Not to cause offence, but that's hardly a "fascinating concept" as you put it, in regards to the one you're drawing inspiration from.

Baring in mind the size of the USB end won't those screws me about a 10th of a millimetre across?

Still in progress ;)))

>>> Not to cause offence, but that's hardly a "fascinating concept" as you put it, in regards to the one you're drawing inspiration from.
I believe it's still to early to compare it to a finished product.

>>> Baring in mind the size of the USB end won't those screws me about a 10th of a millimetre across?
I assume that, most likely, it will stay only in the virtual world, as there, supposedly, would not be enough buyers to think about manufacturing them in reality.
