Starting a new animation : D

It's been about 2 years since my last personal animation.. so I've decide to start on an idea I've had for a while now.

step 1 for this animation will be to concept and create the first character.

This character sleeps (partially buried in dirt and stones) until he is summoned. To the uneducated traveler he would appear as a pile of stones, but if summoned he emerges from his shallow grave to preform 1 of 2 tasks.

So - this character is technically some sort of bridge guardian - those who want to pass place a coin in a pedestal next to the trail, he wakes up, standing from his pile, and then decides if the traveler should pass or if the traveler should die. This character is needed in order to "call" for the bridge, which is another part of the animation

I'm thinking this character should be slow at first, but very fast and responsive during a fight. (the main character in the animation, a human, will toss this bridge guardian a chunk of gold ore, which the guardian will catch and eat)

I also think he should be "made of" rocks and stones, like he's lived in the ground forever

so now I will try and come up with a character who FEELS like they belong. I want to sketch at least 1 a night until we have some silhouette/form that is right for the part. I think i'll need help here the most, because I have the dumbs when it comes to character development. plz feel free to post refs or links or whale pron or whatever

any thoughts? I like how there could be a lot of weight here, like I picture him kinda standing with really bent knees because of his massive upperbody - i intend for his "muscles" to actually be stone - same with that big mound on his back - that is a boulder. maybe i should take this one a bit further

slight change of plans. I'll be working with an awesome artist, Nuri Keli, who will be doing all the concepting for the characters and maybe even some environments. So, in the meantime, I'm going to be doing some r&d into substance designer.

So far I really like it. I decided to do a test on this first concept guy, and got a cool look from only 2 effect nodes and my very basic knowledge of the program

For a first go it's pretty close!

I'd like to see more cracks / ridges, maybe filled with dark-earthy dirt and moss? If he's been in the ground for eternity, surely nature would've grown on/around him. Maybe some gnarled tree roots around his neck.

I'm assuming he begins positioned like this:

(the guy in blue). With his back towards the sky? Be a really cool shot (in my opinion) of him raising up out of the earth slowly, using his arms, then steadying himself onto his legs, all the while dirt and rocks are crumbling off of him exposing his more humanoid form. Sort've left elbow up and out, fist down on the ground, repeat for right arm. Raising of the head, arching of the back, getting his feet flat on the ground, then standing up fully and shaking/roaring at the witless traveller who wants to cross the bridge to Candy Mountain.

- this is exactly what I was thinking, and your imagery of him standing is near perfect to what I'm wanting to happen : )

The shoulder area is good, the lack of neck sells it. Also his biceps are the right size (IMO), but I think his forearms and hands (while cool) are wrong for the character. Chunky wrists and chunky, stumpy fingers would work better rather than slender fingers. Also, his stomach is toned and slender... again, I'd give him a really chunky stomach. His legs are a bit too short as well (even for cartoon proportions) and, again, I'd go for the opposite of what you're doing with the feet. Need huge feet, like tree trunks, but made of stone.

It would be very easy to fix and get the desired cracked effect all in one go by just going crazy with the inflate brush. It'll tear up your mesh a bit but that's all good, can clone it and use it to project the details onto a zremeshed version.

awesome, thanks for the feedback! I've pointed nuri to this thread, so he will be able to use your guys' input when he starts working on his concept art for this character. I'll ask him to post his concepts here if he wants too (so this bridge guardian will most likely look slightly, very, or 100% different based on what we come up with) - so if you have have ideas please post them!

I agree about the legs now that I look at them.. also, nuri had referenced tree ents from lord of the rings the first time we discussed the character, so in-grown tree parts, etc are a possibility

Just for shits and giggles I did a quick 30 min sculpt of what my feedback said so it's easier to see beforehand and adopt or ignore any and all changes. Picture worth a thousand words and all...

[edit] Mucked around some more, just because it's fun to fuck around with... not hijacking or nothing, just bored.

(i see what your pointing out) and yea zbrush sketching is fun as shit

still going through substance designer, there are a lot of nodes to learn : /

todays effort... I call it, oily ground

I'm going to spend the next few days trying to come up with a nice looking rock wall / mountainy material
