Can a standard direct light be used with Parti Volume Shader?

Hey guys.

I'm trying to create a beam of energy in Mental Ray, using Max 2013.

I really like the effect I'm getting with the Parti Volume Shader and a spotlight, but I need a cylinder of light, not a cone. I've tried using an old school Standard Free Direct light, which gives me the shape I want, but I'm not getting the volume effect.

Is there a way to make Parti work with a Direct light?

If not, is there a way to make a photometric spot produce a cylinder of parallel beams?
