what is the easiest way to partially split a mesh along an edge?

select the edges you need seperated, scroll down the edge rollout, find and press 'split'
probably the easiest way to select one side of the split is to select one line of polys in polygon mode and lift away as the edges and verts will be more or less in the same place

Ah, I think you mean "best topology." Well, there's many ways to skin a cat, here's an over-complicated cut:

You could just have the 2 meshes separate, (detach one side) lift/modify that side, then attach and weld.....if that's all you were wanting to do.

awesome, thanks. It's always something simple like that. I'll be filling the holes later, and the area wont be visible so I'm not concerned with topology. Thanks again.
