Fully automated and faster! Oh man. Now if only the traffic would die down so I can get to the free download page...

[edit] Shit, now I can't even load up the main page.

[edit] Got it, trying it out now.

I prefer manual tweaking and can't imagine a plugin setting my scene.
Obviously, if you are not into Vray, that could do.

Not a Vray user but that looks pretty cool. Yet another tool to make the whole process 'easier'.

I know HDR Light Studio was brought up here recently and Bolts reply was something like, "Learn to light." I guess this falls under the same category but IMO its just another tool to increase productivity really.

Well here's a simple test:

Here's a render I did using my own settings. Render time 1:01:21

And then I loaded up SolidRocks and clicked the auto exposure, white balance and made sure nothing was over-exposed. Render time 0:45:03

Conclusion from a SolidRocks noob perspective: my original scene was too dark but solid rocks went and made it look like a clay render. Will see if I can tweak it to something inbetween. Liking the faster render time, though. Might start putting together a demo reel.

Played some more with SolidRocks. Found the interior/exterior/etc presets. Also found that auto setting the exposure messed up again. Checked some more and it had set my camera's shutter speed to 0.0037. Maybe it's because I didn't bother chucking in a background? Anyway, quick to fix. Did a quick clay render, took about 10-15 seconds (sorry, didn't make a note of it) and I reckon it looks great. So, SolidRocks gets my thumbs up.

I know, it ain't too hard to get "okay" results. Trouble for me is my laptop doesn't give correct output and whenever I see one of my renders on another monitor I get pissed off with my laptop and want to chuck it out the window. So I like the over-exposed feature.

To get great results in the shortest possible time per frame is something that I don't have the knowledge for. Good thing is SolidRock gives an output of the main variables it changes so I reckon I can learn a lot faster by studying that.

Seems like a bad idea to rely on a product to set up vray for you considering that would limit what you would know how to do with vray if that makes sense?

Sort of like if you had a robot make you a ham sandwhich so much that you forgot how to do it yourself and then were SOL once you wanted a turkey sandwhich.

Just limiting yourself by taking the easyway out it seems to me (for anyone who would strictly rely on a product like this), but the same could be said for many plugins that do specialty stuff for you.

Yup, 99% of users, even long time users, still use the default settings day in day out. This will help them more than an experienced user who knows the ropes.

solid rocks is the sh*t for advanced lighting, arq rendering, it will always help find the best settings ( time - quality wise ), product rendering, camera fly-through...

but unless you have one mighty renderfarm to take advantage of it in animation ( organic, character animation ), we are mostly still pretty much tied to traditional lighting, and LOTS of compositing...
