So long Autodesk, and thanks for all the fish
show user profile  Nik Clark
Well, the day has finally come.

I've had a 3DS/Max license since about 1994 (3DSr4). I've had nearly every release except for Max 1.0 as I didn't have Windows NT. Going further back, I used to fiddle with the Atari-ST 3D program Tom Hudson made, the name of which escapes me. I've loved 3DS and I've hated it for more than two decades, but it's been part of my life. Our time together has ended. The company I was working for had kindly been buying me a license for at home for the last 15 years, so I haven't actually paid for it for a very long time. Today my last ever Max license expired. It feels odd, but kind of ok.

To be honest, I've been cheating on Max for the last year with a sexier and strangely foreign package, so my 3D hobby can continue, but I'll miss the old girl. You knew when she'd crash. You knew things were going to be tough and installs insanely long, but she was comfortable and familiar, like a fat girl that is a regular and easy lay.

Anyway, from here on in, my knowledge will start to become less relevant than it already is. I'll still be here, but unless it's "my arrows have disappeared and I can't move the object", I won't be of much practical use.

Here's an image comparing my first ever 3D attempt on an Atari-ST, and one I made just now. I think it shows just how much progress I've made in 30 years. As you can see, my imagination and skills are almost unrecognisable now, and I am a fully fledged CGVFX wizard.

Well, that's all. So long, and thanks for the fish.

Good lil post.

But seriously, why would someone (besides a full-time freelancer) buy a license?

As Garp would say, ze oueb provides.

Agreed Herfst1! Their pricing model just doesn't include part time freelancers or indie work at all, its kinda why blender is taking up a bit of the slack in those areas and opens up the market for other applications to strive.

I like zbrush and substance painter for that, its actually affordable! zbrush is free updates and substance only chargers more if you make 100k+ a year.

FU Autodesk and your greed ;) but keep making awesome products!

That lens flare is a beauty. Those 30 years have paid off :)

Are you retiring?

"Anyway, from here on in, my knowledge will start to become less relevant than it already is"

I doubt it. The program hasn't changed enough in the last 10 years or so to make any of your knowledge outdated. Just don't phrase any of your tips with reference to the icons for certain functions, and you'll be fine.

These new licensing schemes are complete bull. Both from AD and Adobe.. They might as well just put Greed somewhere in the bloody title.
The old upgrade license was a good thing IMO, you paid annually for the right to upgrade when available, and if you ddn't, your software, that you paid a lot of money for, just stayed where it was. It didn't suddenly stop working...

I'll admit, that I haven't used Max for anything serious, since 2007, where I stopped working in the GFX buisiness.
I have been messing with Blender a bit, and it seems like a logical switch from Max,, but goddammit if I can get my head around the UI... The functions are all there, but I just cant find them.

How many people, on this forum, are actually still using 3D Max these days ?

Terribly boring signature.

Using Max 2015, perpetual license plus vray 3. Won't be upgrading. It does everything I'll need for interior visuals.

How come you got fish? All I get is stress, run-time errors and missing windows due to dual screening like a boss.

What's your primary package these days?

I've played around with Modo and C4D but still favor the good old 3D Studio Bullshit - it is indeed like the reliable, slightly chubby girl who always puts out. Still haven't managed to wrap my brainbox around the Blender UI-clusterfuck, but it's looking more and more promising with each release.

Unless a year subscription is written into a contract for a client I won't pay.
I'm happy with my max 2010, the upgrades never seemed to justify the cost.

I purchased 2015 last year and it was a painful decision, but once I heard they were killing the perpetual license and going to a sub-only model I was glad I did.

It's a damned shame to see AD going this way. Nik, what have you moved onto?

This post reminded me UFC McGregor's ".. Bye.. Thanx for the cheese".

I agree that there is not much change made since early versions.
They planned some serious development.
That "Excalibur" thing or something like that.
But then i guess there was no need for that.
"Cheese" is coming anyway. Why bother...
