Snap & Pivot
show user profile  Jock
Is there any way to actually have your snap pick up a pivot point?

Its something thats bugged me for ages and i've always just 'made do' but thought its worth the question as it would save me a lot of grief is someone knows an answer.

Obviously in some shapes its easy enough because there happens to be a snap point where the pivot is, for the likes of a rectangle or whatever. But if i have a shape thats been modified quite a bit and the pivot is no longer ona snap point, but say i want to move it to an exact point on another object, so far all i can ever do is eyeball it as close as i can.

Is there a way to be exact?

I don't understand what you are trying to say to be honest.

Its not as simple as just using the 'pivot' snap type is it? I dont get what you want.

zoom all the way in to get a good a match as the app will allow or right-click snap to specify what you want it to snap too would be the best options i guess

Right click on the snap tool (i think) is what K-Tonne means?

Sorry, i'll try again...

So ive got an irregular shape therefore the pivot doesnt sit nicely above another snap point, like a midpoint for example, its sitting way out on its own as you can see.

Now what i want to do is to move the objects pivot point, and place it 'exactly' where i've placed the red dot. Now the problem i have is that i cant snap to the pivot in the first place and therefore the best i can do is eyeball it.

The pivot snap lets me move an object by snapping on its pivot but doest seem to do what i'm after which is snap on the pivot when i want to move the pivot itself, not the object.

Hopefully thisd makes more sense, although i understand its still a bit hard to explain.

I think there is a tick box in the snap settings (or a different tab in the same window) that says 'use pivot center as snap' or something like that that mean when you click somewhere near the pivot it will use the pivot itself rather than just close to it.

Ok with a bit of experimenting i've kinda got it but its far from easy.

Basically the pivot snap does work, even if youre moving the pivot and not the object, but getting it to actually snap is another matter. It seems extremely tricky for it to pick up the pivot snap as opposed to any other snap.

I tested it by turning off all the snaps other than pivot and it works a treat. But the problem is you need at least one of the other snaps on to be able to snap to the enpoint you want it to end up at, but then trying to get it to identify the pivot is a nigtmare.

Is there maybe a way to turn snaps on and off midway through an operation....so you could say turn everything off except pivot, snap to pivot, then turn pivot off and say enpoint on, then snap to the point you want?

Hopefully that makes sense.

I dont think ive ever had more than 2 snaps on at any time. usually just pivot and vertex. snaps in max are awful

These snaps are annoying as hell, after searching on google, quite a few people have the same problem, and theres some real complicated answers out there. All it needs to do is identify the pivot snap!

Do you guys know if it is possible to allocate a snap to a keyboard button?

All the individual snaps can be assigned shortcuts in the customise UI window they are under 'Snap to...' in the Main UI section

Yeah that works a treat, you can turn the individual snaps on/off during an operation using the keys. So you can have just pivot on, select the pivot, then turn on end point or whatever, then move the pivot to the exact vertex you want it to be placed at.

All i need to do is change the buttons...try pressing alt+f8 all the whle holding down the left mouse button!!!! No small task...

There is another way i found too whereby you can use a 'working pivot' but although it solves the issue it depends what you want to do with it, in my case i need it for the symmetry modifier so not sure if it would do the job.

Anyway, all solved, cheers for the help!!

If it worked like that on mine Garp it would be great but yours seems to be different from mine, it jsut wont find the pivot, ill try this jing thingy out to show you.

Like MrG said, snaps in max aren't that great. Depending on the snap max sometimes doesn't find the target. Usually orbiting the view or trying in another viewport solves it, but not always.
As I'm still using max 9, I take it there's been no improvement since.

Ok heres my first jing, hopefully it shows what i mean, just that the only way to pick up the pivot is to turn everything else off. It can be done but sometimes it seems like theres 1 pixel in the whole damn screen that works, and sometimes not even that.

Albeit dont get me wrong ive got the answer now, just use the keys to turn the snaps on and off, but just thought id put a jing on for the hell of it. A new toy!!

how do i get the video to show here rather than a link?
