Snail Shell Modeling.

Whats the easiest way to go about modeling a snails shell?

After playing around with this for a while... I found a decent method:

1.) loft a circle shape around a helix path
2.) play with the helix Bias (under the heil's parameters)
3.) under lofts "Deformations" tweak the the scale of the loft so that the spiral tapers
4.) I also used the Spherify modifier to round the whole shape a bit

I'll probably take this into Zbrush tomorrow and dynamesh the geometry into a solid piece, then sculpt a little snail friend. If it's half decent I'll share the results with you guys.

I've just updated an old WIP of mine on scriptspot: Snail primitive.
I never implemented the mapping coords but the geometry part works fine. It should give you a reasonably clean topo to start with.

And just for inspiration.

I had to build a bunch of snails for a project end of last year (among other things). The method you've done RedTurtle is pretty much bang on the money. Had I known Garp had made a primitive it would've saved me some time hehe

I've got a few snails retopo'd from the loft circle heli mesh (quite low poly if you'd like some), didn't need to sculpt them but considered it as a little side project :)
