Smooth irregularly shaped object
show user profile  vkhu
I want to create something like this:

I managed to get the shape right (with sharp edges, not rounded off like in the picture) but when it comes to smoothing, I always get an unrecognizable blob. Can anyone help me please?

I know that when I try smoothing things and it looks stupid, I chamfer the edges a little bit, which is what it looks like the creator of that did.

Pictures of your result would help. It's hard to tell what you're doing wrong when we have no clue what you're doing.

@jakeywunder: tried it. It can only work properly on some edges

@Black Mariah: Basically, I just create a lookalike polygon:

Yeah, that mesh will be blobby as hell. Rather than using chamfers use the connect tool to add extra polys near the areas that need to be sharper. Quickslice and cut are also useful for this.

This good old picture from our very own mr. Grotey explains a little bit about mesh smoothing

Terribly boring signature.

@Black Mariah: Some of the weirdly angled place can't be connected.

@TiMoN: chamfer and smooth resulted in this:

Look carefully between picture 3 and 4, I changed which lines I had selected when I extruded them to .5 INCHES. Extrude to whatever you want for the exact effect you want, but I did half an inch ;o It's not the prettiest turbo smooth in the world but it works. I'm not sure how you were getting that shape you were getting :P Basically I selected EVERY single edge and then only removed 2 or 4 from my selection before I chamfered.
