SMES (Super Material Editor Switcher) Script Error
show user profile  FX
I use this script to manage materials in my scenes,

http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/smes-super-material-editor-switcher

but it just choked and I think I've lost all my mat categories, does anyone know where the problem might be, or if it's recoverable ?
It threw an error message about a VRay material not being able to be converted, then after saving and reloading all my categories have disappeared and I get "Unknown property: "name" in undefined", I tried autobacks and the same thing happened.
The script author doesn't respond which is why I'm asking here.

Better still, can anyone suggest a better way to manage materials, this may be an old method that has been superseeded,

thx

Are you using the Slate material editor, or the older one with 24 slots?

Sorry should have mentioned, yes the "other" one :), I don't think I've ever used slate, so I'm pretty ignorant of it's capabilities, it's the node approach that puts me off...maybe time for a change :)

aaaaand....10 minutes in I feel a complete nub :)...problem solved... use slate :P

It "was" an old habit dying hard....it's dead :) got to take off these legacy blinkers from time to time..seems like I'm missing out.

Slate is awesome. One of the best additions of recent years!

Pro tip: You can drag the little connecting ball to windows outside of the material editor, like the environment slot, etc. It took me a while to work this out.

Enjoy!

Thx, I'm still tying to work out how to set up groups, It should be straight forward, but I can't seem to drag scene materials into groups.

You can create new pages (tabs) in the Slate editor. This is what I use for material organisation in scenes.

Jesus effing h, SMES was a simple material group category tool, I can't seem to find any good info on groups and organization, everyones blathering on about nodes and complexity :(
So there's something I need to do before I can drag materials to groups, I'm lost....

I can drag new maps to groups, but not scene materials ?

Edit : ok it seems the only way to do this is create seperate librarys for each category, but that means I can't use the Group function....I'm typing out loud...it's a bad habit....too much caffeine.....:)

Thx Nik I'll settle for this until I can discover how the groups work, maybe your limited as to what you can and can't group.

Slates a pain in the ass, and slowing me down, I fix the error by resetting max and merging the scene, I wouldn't mind knowing why it keeps corrupting, no response from the author or scriptspot, rebuilding the categories is better then having to use slate.
Slate maybe good for complex mats, but for fast workflow it's useless.
Maybe this is just related to a standard Max corrupt file issue, but I load autobacks and the error is still there.
