Slate - Material to Sample Slot

Hey there,
I am (again) trying to get used to the slate material editor. I really want to like it, but its giving me a hard time with some annoyig things. Please is there any easy way to do the following things:

- Quickly change the material type of an existing material from one of the sample slots (e.g. standard to vrayLightMtl)

- Send my current material that I am working on in slate to one of the material editor sample slots

I dont want to have to switch to compact again to do these things :(
Im on Max 2011 btw.

Right-click on the material in Slate and choose "Change Material/Map type". You will need to re-link any maps.

Not sure about the second one.

Mhm I dont have that option, it has been added in Max 2012 I guess.

The material has to be in the main panel to have that option.

To add it to a Material Slot you drag the Materials Output (the yellow circle) to one of the Material Slots at the bottom of the Material/Map Browser list. The same thing goes for adding it t a scene object or in a modifier (i.e. add a map to the Displacement Modifier). Took me quite some time before I figured that out :P

Or if you drag the output and drop it in the Slate View in an empty place a menu will pop-up with the Sample Slots as one of the options.

Nanne, you are right, I'd forgotten that. It took me ages to figure out how to get the material into the Environment slot, and that was the solution, lol. My memory is fading.

Luckily we have this forum, so we don't need to rely on our memory ;)

At the beginning I was about to give up on Slate because of that, it felt useless if you couldn't add maps to any other part of the UI then as materials. Luckily I found the solution in the nick of time, now I use Slate every day :) But the Compact Material Editor is still very useful in some cases, I'm glad they didn't take it away. Now Max has got two awesome Material Editors! Love it! :D

Yea, I think I will use both as I now have the option to change between them with a keyboard shortcut. Maybe there is a build in option to toggle the material editor mode, I did not find it in the Customize Menu, so I wrote a simple macro and bound it to Shift+M to switch from Slate to Compact and vice versa. Maybe someone can use it:

macroscript toggleMeditMode
if maxOps.mtlDlgMode == #basic then maxOps.mtlDlgMode = 1
else maxOps.mtlDlgMode = 0
)--end mcr
