skinning a biped
show user profile  stevey2shoes
I've just spent 2 hours skinning a biped, and need 2 identical characters, but if I clone my original character (shift and drag)r it does anything BUT clone what I've just made,
Any ideas why please

Sorry by that I mean the cloned character it makes isn't the same as the first, ie the clothes wont fit, the clothes come off the character if I more the character, or the screen just blends both into one.

if you wanna clone a skinned character you also need to clone the entire rig, this works perfectly with bones but im not sure about biped

yes I've tried selecting everything about 7 or 8 times, attaching stuff, not attaching stuff, then when you move say the mesh the biped moves but slower and un skins itself.

well you could try merging the character file with itself, this way it clones and renames everything on a more universal level and lowers the chance of cross contamination

I tried selecting everything by name in the meantime, shift and drag to copy, which works, but then when I try to move character number 1 the clothes stretch to 3 times their width, and things separate from the biped.
just updating you.

scratch that, even if I don't clone the character, and I select the complete character (original) and try to move him, his clothes out run him, and smudge, its really frustrating as I've not done anything illogical.

You could try saving your rigged character as a different file. Opening this second file, renaming all of the objects (including the biped bones) ... Max does have a "multiple rename" feature to make this a super quick task. (Tools > Rename Objects). you may want to place the new character + rig in different layers at this point.

Then, merge the new file in with the original file. (having it in different layers will make selecting and moving things about easier)

Edit
Oh, hang on... my above words were written assuming you'd tried Mr_Stabby's suggestion, but it looks like you're still trying to shift-drag stuff?

Yes. Just merge in the entire thing and it works great.
I do that all the time...making armies with the same 3 or 4 characters.

Save the rigged character. Then merge it and click "automatically rename"

Will try this, but I need to sort the problem of the clothes jumping off the body if I try and move anything no?
its as if the have 2 separate orbit points, if that makes sense, and moving one will make the other move further but in relation.

If you have one incorrectly skinned character, then yes... you will need to fix it before making another one.
