Skin Wrap Modifier Polygon Count
show user profile  cbflex
Hey All,

I'm working on a character I made in Zbrush, I created a low poly version, uploaded it to mixamo for catrigging, and brought it into 3ds max. The low poly version works perfectly...

When I bring in the high poly version from Zbrush into max in the Tpose, and place it over the control object, and then place the skin wrap modifier on it and attach the control object, 3ds max freezes up for a long time...

So, to try to remedy this, I setup a pro-optimizer modifier first, making only 10% of the vertices visible, which was just enough till I saw noticable detail loss, and then above this modifier I attached the Skin Wrap Modiifer...

It finally worked to some degree, but it needs tweaking. My problem now is that while I'm tweaking, if I press Reset at any time, it freezes up again and takes forever to complete the operation...

I am wondering, what are the polygon limits or avg polygon counts my high res model should be at before applying the skin wrap modifer?

May seem like a real drag, but rather than optimising a vert-heavy model, could you by anyway make lower density mesh (for you hi-poly model) that is then mesh/turbo smoothed? Apply the mesh/turbo smooth at the lower "control cage" stage of the stack and then m/t smooth it .... Guys?

Now sure about a maximum vert limit, but it sounds like you're trying to utilize skin wrap in a way it wasn't intended to be used... ie, you're trying to skin a high poly zbrush model to a low poly poly model... the modifier would work better if that process were reversed (skin wrapping a low poly model to the higher poly model) (and im not trying to suggest you skin a 500k poly zbrush mesh)

how many verts are on your zbrush mesh that you're trying to skin wrap?
