why skin superior to physique?

I been reading this book '3Ds Max Animation with Biped' and found this statement "In 3ds Max 5 and later, Skin has been improved to the degree that it is superior to Physique." why do artists consider skin superior to physique; even though at a glance physique seems so advanced than skin.. i mean, with automatic envelop adjustments.. and volume preservation on twisting areas like and.. bla bla bla?

you got a good point there.. with what i'm doing now, physique worked great. anyway, there is a physique to skin converter that Autodesk wrote no? i will be using that in my next project, for i exactly found the same point you mentioned. im using skinwrap on physique skinned character and i have to update point cache every time i do a change to my animation. :/ so is physique kind of "dead feature" of max? i mean like biped, which will be inherited its space by CAT soon..

It really comes down to this - skin can affect individual vertices, physique cant. Also while the spline transforms in physique are an excellent idea, the lack of control over the expression of joints ruins it.
So basically right now in tandem with clever rigs skin can do everything physique can do and more, its a more basic layer but also less restrictive.

Physique could be awesome if they fixed these 2 but AD has no interest in developing(or even preserving) the animation side of max these days so wont happen.
