Simple velvetie fur in Max?

Hey all...
I played around with adding fur for some of these creatures...but it never seems to be something I can do easily.

Has Max come out with a SIMPLE way to add fur yet?

I was thinking of adding fur in to her...constantly trying to improve each issue.
I tried unsuccessfully playing around a few weeks ago. I'm using Brazil 2 and of course Max 2009.

Any one with some thoughts...I'd appreciate it. Scott Christian Sava

Real fur acts differently than velvet and the like. Noisy falloff maps would get you velvet, I think. Fur with any real length would use the built-in hair/fur system, which unfortunately I have no experience with. However, presumably the shorter the fur you're looking for, the easier it'd be to set up ;) Just needs a lot of density.

Thanks. I thought we HAD a velvet material on her. But up just doesn't seem to work.

Are there any techniques we could try to make this work close up? Maybe fur isnt' the solution. But I'd like for it to be believable.

i would have thought a really dense speckle in the displacement slot might get it close? add in a reflectance or specular falloff to give it some sheen

Well, what you have in that image looks just like velvet, or some similar material. At least, as best I can tell - velvet has more than just a static appearance, but also a certain way of reacting to motion in relation to a light source. Quite a complicated material to begin with ;)

It specifically reminds me of those styrofoam-y, lightly fuzzy dolls. Which I couldn't begin to explain to anyone who's never seen/felt them x.x

In Brazil 2...are there any default shaders that look like short fur or velvet?
I've not found anything yet.

Maybe I'm looking in Max...and should be looking in Brazil 2? Scott Christian Sava

I think there is such a thing for finalRender, in the finalShaders pack, but I don't know about Brazil. Does Brazil have open shader-creation capabilities, such that someone may have made one?

I made a Brazil2 port of a shortfur shader from a siggraph whitepaper about the 101 dalmations movie.

Email me and I'll dig up a copy.

Dejitarujin...I think I should check with the Brazil guys. They've been wonderful whenever I've needed anything. It's not until I posted this request here that it dawned on me. It might be a Brazil thing. Scott Christian Sava
