Simple Question – Path Deform
show user profile  peterjung
Hi All

I am revisiting an old model from a while back and I am having a problem figuring out why path deform is apparently behaving oddly as follows:

I have a helix and a cylinder. I want to get the cylinder to deform and follow the helix path.

I apply the path deform to the cylinder and choose the helix as the path as this happens:

When I apply some stretch to the cylinder it looks like this:

Question – why does the cylinder stretch not follow the path of the helix but rather seems to be somehow rotated?

Any takers?

Thanks in advance

Try reset xForm on cylinder/helix, my guess is a dodgy rotation or some other transform has gone AWOL.

It's mostly because path deform is a piece of shit in some ways...BoomerLabs recently posted an updated version of this..but I doubt it's free

I’ve tried everything I can think of to no avail I can repeat the same in a fresh scene every time.

I want to be able to deform along a several very specific dimensional helices but this problem will not allow me to do that because of the distortion of the path.

Any other thoughts?

OK! Found a solution...well actually an alternative method of achieving what I need.

This kind gentleman in the following youtube video gave me an alternative method that seems to work

EDIT - actually scrub that...I need to be able to animate the extrusion along the length of the spline...hmmmm

Are you using path deform WSM? (world space as opposed to object space version of path deform)
Try that.

And its only $80 until the end of the year.
