Why can't i show map in viewport in 3ds max? im using 3ds max 2009, and when i go on material editor on bitmap, i click the image, show map in viewport and drag it onto the plane. But it wont let me see the material until i render it.. Help please :)
The answear bellow is not working; when i click on the cube fort 'show map in vpt'; my materials show grey and not in the chosen materials...
Open the Material Editor. On the material that has your texture map assigned to it, click 'Show Standard map in Viewport'. It's the icon that looks like a cube with a checkered pattern on it. Then in the highlighted viewport, press F3 to cycle between shaded and wireframe views.

You can get some maps to render in the viewport in older version of max (pre-2011), with a following wind, when you get lucky, sometimes. Diffuse should work. Architectural materials work better than standard materials.
Advance Software has an alternative (plugin) solution which provides far better viewport mapping, lighting & shading capability. An updated beta of "Infinity Shader" will be available shortly.

AS, I can't believe you plugged Infinity in that response!
is I imagine you're using a large texture in OpenGL (software) mode, switch over to Direct 3D via Customise > Preferences > Viewports > Choose Driver.

Lovely motor, mate. One owner, hardly used. Bargain. :)
As Dave says select the DirectX 9 driver.

Thanks Guys, but nothing works. I've tried several things and searched the whole internet, but...nope. Any other suggestions?
Also my material editor is always set on architectural materials when I open it and it is never cleared of materials, it always appears with materials from a previous project. How can I adjust this?
Thanks a lot.

Did you add a UVW Map Modifier or give the plane Mapping Co-ordinates?

on some of my polys I applied a UVW modifier, but others don't need it as they use the default co-ordinates, or is this wrong?

textures should show up if they have UVW map or default co-ordinates. Is your texture complex? Is it a blend or mix material , ie: does it have multiple levels of textures?
