shift dragging edges not working?
show user profile  parkerfamily
for some reason i can't shift drag to create a new face from an edge anymore, i'd just set the hotkey again in customize but i don't know what that action would be called. any help?

You don't need to set it as a hotkey, it's just a normal function.

Is the problem just with edges or all shift+transform operations are broken? Can you still clone objects and sub-objects?

i can still clone. and i've tried just clicking extrude, it does some weird thing along all the edges, similar to chamfer it seems.

you can only shift drag edges if its a border edge, its also possible that you think its a border edge but theres a hidden face.

See if you can shift drag a single open edge.... bet you can ;P
If you are trying to shift drag a row of edges you may have duplicated some edges, in which case weld verts along the row.

your right it was open edge. but is there a way to drag a closed edge? I have the very beginnings of a building, and would like to have a closed bottom, but if not i can just put it in the ground, so meh.

Any single dge can only have 2 polygons attached to it, therefore no. Throw up a pic, it sounds you are slightly confused as to this shift-dragging procedure and what you have. make sure the pic has edges faces turned on :)

If you need a face extruded from an edge that already has 2 polygons connected, split the two edges and drag from one of the resulting edges. you wont be able to weld the edges back together, but you get your new polygon coming from where you want.

While direct modeling software has been around for a while, I started paying close attention only when SpaceClaim came around. I am now convinced that this is the way ahead and whether the CAD vendors like it or not, their customers are going to ask to be served this dish. So they had better learn to cook it sooner than later.

Me thinks you can shift drag closed edges in Edit Mesh.
