Shape Extrusion/Morph
show user profile  danteV
Hi, im a MAX newbie and can do this easily in my old environment (Ray Dream) but cant find a reference to what should be a very basic operation. Imagine a 2D star spline and sitting above it a little higher on the Z axis is a 2D circle spline.. I want to extrude the star INTO the shape of the circle above it. So im extruding and morphing the shape at the same time. I then want to be able to apply a Taper to the created object. Sound simple? I hope so... any feedback appreciated!!

Thanks for your reply Manolo, I fiddled around with the Loft function but I still couldnt get it to work in the way I wanted. Heres a rough sketch of what im trying to achieve:

Is there a way to do this with loft so it can have a shape a each end?

I just found a way to make this form by extruding the star with 1 segment, then spherizing the top most segment... so far so good, now I want to Taper the whole thing with a nice curve, but to do that I need to add more horizontal segments down the shape, how do I do this? Ive been trying all sorts of things with Compound Objects/Edit Geometry, but no luck... Im sure it must be simple but I cant find a refernce to it.

1 Draw star
2 Draw circle
3 position them one above the other with desired distance
4 draw a line between the center of the 2 shapes (doesn't have to be placed that way, but for now...)
5 with the line selected, press loft within the compound objects panel
6 In "creation method", press "get shape" and select star or circle. Notice that below there is a window named "path parameters", and it says Path:0.0. That means the shape you've just selected is to be placed at the beggining (0 %) of the path.
7 set that parameter on 100
8 press "get shape" if it's not still yellow, and pick the other shape.

Loft is a parametric construct.
You can modify its building components at any time, plus it has some nice features like deformations.
You should give it a go.
