Setting up a website
show user profile  Jock
Can someone help to explain the very basics with getting a website up and running.

So basically i rent a domain, then do i need to find server space for it to be hosted so i can put my website etc onto it? if so can anyone recomend where i should go.

Also when you have a domain how would go about setting up email using the domain so that you would have say or whatever.

I have a website up and running at the minute but i know nothing about how it works as all i had to do was get the domain and a pal of mine basically set it all up including the email. I'm thinking about a new domain but thought it would be best if i set this one up myself so just afer some basics.

Cheers guys.

The looks pretty good and seems to do everything i'm after.

With places like them though, rather than use their website wizard could i say take my existing website which is on a different domain and was made using wordpress, and simply somehow move it to the new domain?

Yeah the server space is just a folder on their computer, you should be able to just copy and paste what you already have and dump it in the new one.

you can just do it using windows too. the ftp folders open like regular local folders in windows so its as simple as copying something from your desktop to your my documents

There is a little bit more than copy paste if you have an existing wordpress site as wordpress runs with a database so you will need to read up on transfering a wordpress site.

There are plenty of guides on how to do this, it does involve exporting and importing databases.
