I have a scene with the same object duplicated many times but in different instances (like 20 objects that are instanced to each other mixed with another 20 objects that are instanced to each other etc')
Is there a quick way to select the objects by their instance relation ?

Well in max 7 when you open the 'Select by list' box you can check the 'Select Dependants' box at the bottom, then when you choose an item in the list it will also select all the items that are dependant on it, i.e. its instances, but as this list box got changed in the later versions it may be a little different for you

I was sure that option was for linked objects.
