how to select all polgyons that point to the top?

Hey

I'd like to select all the polies with normals facing upwards - without having them to select one by one. The ones facing to the sides and downward shoul remain unselected..
It's a large complicated object so working with select by angle is not an option.
There must be some solution.. Anyone happens to know?

Have you tried going to top view, clicking "ignore backfacing" and drag-selecting your model? That should get you 75% of the way there (assuming there are no bevels or chamfers).

Else I always just select the top (or sides) by doing a crude select-drag then alt-select-drag to unselect the poly's I don't want. Fastest way I know how.

Graphite menu has a function that does just this I believe. You can choose the angle and set the deviation from that angle also. Have a look at the selection options and you should find it.

Edit.

Is that what you are referring to when you say it isn't an option?

Hey, Thanks guys! That was quick of you.

Using the Graphite selection tools helped, in particular the SELECT BY NORMALS feature. Now I can extrude these polies to create a proper snow layer. :-)

Thanks BishBashRoss, I seem to not look into the Graphite tools often enough.

Cheers!
