Scene textures
show user profile  JBH
Hi all, I am a bona fide noob with 3DS Max. I am going through a lot of beginner tutorials. At the same time I also downloaded a city scene just to see how something complex would look before rendering. I notice the roads, a few buses, and one building are textured, but everything else is without texture. The image maps for all the buildings are in the maps folder so I'm a bit clueless as to why everything else is gray. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Could be any number of reasones, if it's available on the net you should've just post the link so someone can take a look.

Off the top of my head, are they showing in the render? If so the viewport show is just switched off.
Select the object that's gray, open material editor (M), and see if any of the material spheres have little triangles at it's edges. If so, that's the material assigned to that object, just click this button:

If not, you'll have to use this button first and then click on the object to get that material in the editor (remember, not all materials in the scene must be in the material editor).

Thanks, I will follow your suggestions. Someone else told me to check the project folder also.

Isn't that "The image maps for all the buildings are in the maps folder" the project folder? :P

The download contained the .max file and a folder titled "Maps." Therein could lie the problem.

Yes but you said they were all there. Have you forgotten that part? :D
Maybe the paths are wrong but that's still inside max

You're right, the images are all there. The viewport configuration did not have view objects shaded with maps selected. That explains much, and selecting that causes things to slow down and eventually crash. I'm thinking I should upgrade my card. It's an older HD4850.
