Saving down to earlier versions of Max
show user profile  dcny30
Good morning,

I received a max file that I can't open with either in 2009 or 2014. Rather than asking for the 3ds format - is there an online site that can convert/save down max files to earlier versions?

I did a search and came up with nothing.

Not that I know of, but you could just ask the person to save it out as an older version, instead of asking for a .3ds file (note: .3ds is horrible anyway. .fbx or .obj are far better!).

I believe Max can only save back as far as 2010 version, and if the person doesn't know how to do it, it's literally just as simple as File > Save As: in the "Save as Type" drop-down will be the options for older versions.

I have 2009. I've been asking my boss for years to get an upgrade but she won't/can't. So I'm stuck with it.

I have asked the source to get different formats but hasn't gotten back to me.

You've got Max 2014 version as well though right?

If you're in a rush and aren't bound by NDA's, I'm sure someone here can help you out if you upload the 2015 file.

I got the 2012 and the .3ds format so I'm all good.
