Sandstone head
show user profile  Phil Gornall
Ok, just been mucking about with morpher and created this.

I downloaded a free procedural sandstone material from

It looks more like foam rubber. I need help (and not just with my head)
Where should i go from here to get a grainy stone finish?

Vray is currently on defaults with the indirect illumination set to medium animation.

Who are the animators in here?

I am a member of a few max forums and there seem to be very few animators using max.
Most people either design geometry or work on still images.

Being relatively new to animation, I could definitely use some wisdom, especially with Vray.
default vray doesn't seem to like rendering animatioin because the light blotches from frame to frame.

I have a b.a. in animation which means absolutely nothing on this site : )

I've had this same shadow blotching problem with mR -- i solved it by using displacment, but it looks like thats what your doing... sorry, I don't have vRay :/

not a vray user but when mr does something like that on a material that should work you need higher pixel sampling settings (not sure where they are located in vray)

rendering animations with vray (with global illumination on) can be a tricky task saving and reusing light caches. However there's a good method to avoiding this (it just means higher render times but I wouldn't worry with something this simple).

Try put your first bounce on Irriadiance map and set to High as the preset, select Brute Force as your secondary bounce, this will give you a good solution for rendering characters as you dont need to save a light map and you shouldnt get blotching.

You just need to compare it to sandstone heads on Google.

That texture is OK for loose sand, like a beach or desert but not sandstone. Sandstone is pretty smooth and not very grainy at all (after all it's sand'STONE', not 'sand'. Sandstone sculptures generally have nicks and dents in them though, maybe work on that.

Cheers everyone and especially thanks for the Vray tips Donvella, I will try those out tonight

MrGrotey, I will probably have to go out with the camera and take some high res texture shots of stone and rock, then get to work on photoshop stitching them into something useable.

I am not sure what stone the Easter Island heads are made from, but I bet it's not sandstone. Probably granite or something like that?

We have a granite quarry near where I live and there are some really nice large areas of cliff face with lots of nice texture.

Good excuse to get me out into the fresh air as well, I think my skin is so white I am nearly transparent!!

well I sacked of the procedural material and moved to this one.. The texture is still too low detail, but I think its on the right track.

yea, there is, but this isn't sandstone anymore. I am looking for the right kind of look for him.
Probably not a stone that exists, but I am happy with the colour and texture. It just needs more detail and a bit of work. :)

Just mucking around with morphing. No unwrap yet and I am not happy with the texture. I need to go out and get some photographs done of the local quarry rock face before I unwrap it.

At least you can tell this isn't someone elses work. I promise it will improve... a bit.

I have a problem with this head.

I tried adding a matte shadow to a plane and put a background on the environment map, but being new to environment mapping, I have a problem where the map seems to come through the object.
Can someone tell me how to get around this?
