rounded corners issue

Two part (basic) question here.
Could someone suggest how I can make these edges rounded at the corners and then extrudable as shown. So, a simple square with rounded corners. Tried using nurbs to do this as well but thats creating other issues.
The second part is, ideally the edges on the outside will be smoothed as if it was a square funnel extruding into the box. Ive applied a mesh smooth modifier to the model below but the results are a bit patchy. Does lofting an arc along that edge make sense? As above I can see how you might do it with nurbs but not polygons.
Any thoughts appreciated

chamfer the edgers in edit poly

or use mental ray round corners (image)

on max 2008 u have the option of adding segments to ur chamfers, thus making round corners... so spend a few grand and get max 2008 ;)

Or the MAX 9 Productivity Booster. I guess now I don't have to ask if that was kept in 2008...

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your feedback. No spare mulla floating around so Soontekk, thanks very much for modelling that up for me. Appreciate it. Ive tried champfering the edges but getting some strange results. Probably just need to fiddle with it a bit more. Will try the mental ray option as well.
