Rigging gah...!
show user profile  Cheb
Hey artist community! I am very new to modelling and animation:
I made this fat guy character:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7w67mZ8d70&list=UUKOu_XCVDEJv1FAvxfnIKJg&index=1&feature=plcp

after watching thousands of tutorials, reading up docs, etc etc.
And he looks ok (I think) when hes walking.
But as soon I did a run animation (where limbs bend more) all hell breaks loose. Ive been really breaking my neck over this for over 3 days now, but I cant get rigging to work right. I am using Skin modifier. I tried envelopes, weight painting and just manually adjusting weights. But for example when his legs bend more the 90 degrees all skin messes up (polygons start intersecting with each other unevenly). Could you give me some advice? Maybe there are some rigging plugins I could use?

Thanks,
-mike

You need to use morph targets. It's pretty hard to explain, best if you look it up on youtube. I know there's a CG Academy tutorial on this. Sorry, I can't find the youtube video. Will post if I do.

skin modifier only goes so far because it basically links the vertices to the bones and doesn't consider anything else. What its missing is all the sliding and bulging action to preserve the volume. To fix this you can either use a simulation plugin - these range from simple distance gizmos to full on fat and muscle simulation (ive tried a few of them and didnt really like any of them so i made my own) or you can do what most people do and put a skin morph modifier ontop of skin. Skin morph is basically just a regular morpher that uses bones and their angles as morph influence drivers, this allows you to manually fix up areas that are tricky.
