RIgging and hoods :P
show user profile  mamastoast
Aight sooo im on my first actual project a erhm.. well a character who is supposed to wear a hood, and i haven't been able to find any tutorials silly google just tries to direct me to a head tutorial instead :P... i tried just tweaking on a 1/3 of a sphere but then i realized that it doesn't render the inside of a mesh (obviously duh) sooo that idea died.. :/... Im gonna apply cloth modifier to it so it'll shape itself around the head so thats not an issue, it's just getting the based shape ect...

Also my actual main problem, i can survive no hood for now... is that i can't rig to save my own life, whilst workin on my character i've tried rigging him a few times (after optaining the basic shape :P ) and it always goes terribly wrong... i just don't know how to precise rig a character with the physique modifier.. it's pretty much impossible to get the joints right and the chin just flat out wont attack itself to the head.. im sorry if i seem negative and all hehe.. it's just that i've been trying for a long time by now and i just can't do it... any tips or anything on rigging would be appriecated to much :)...

oooh and if there is any way to make it also render the inside of a mesh it wold be waesome because when the kilt of my character "floats" in the wind i sometimes exposes part of the inside making it.. well seethrough which looks rather strange in all honesty.. soo if you have any suggestions im happy to learn :)

Chances are the reason for your chin not working right is that the envelopes in your Physique mod are set to "Flexible" instead of "Rigid". You should use the Skin mod anyway, though, it's better. Skinning is always a pain though, shoulders and hips are especially difficult. The tutorials that come with Max are a good start, though (assuming they're still there in current versions, I know they mysteriously removed some parts of the rigging tutorial sometime after version 8).

You're gonna want that hood to have a thickness to it, a quick way is to apply a shell modifier. You'll want to put your Cloth mod below the Shell mod.

To get both sides of a poly to show, either apply a two-sided material to it (it's one of the checkboxes at the top) or turn on "Force 2-sided" in the render options. For viewport only, turn off "Backface cull" in the Object Properties.

Im taking since you're calling it a mod that it's an addon i need to download? Also thanks alot for the tips already applied the shell ... so many smart tools i haven't learned about yet :)... one issue im having though... after applying the shell, the two sides of the cloth seems to go through eachother making black areas :/

No, modifiers are added to objects via the modify panel. It's how you make most changes to an object. "Shell" is a modifier, for example.

You have to give the shell some thickness or you'll get Z-fighting (which is what those black areas are, it happens in 3D apps when things are too close).

You mean the Skin modifier? That's not an add-on.

I think we've spolken past eachother :)... i only got the impression that i might be an addon since you used the word mod which usually refers to modification to the original program, but of course you ment modifier, completely my missunderstanding :)... nevertheless... Do you have any suggestion as to how to avoid the black areas when affacting my cloth with wind?

You shouldn't be getting any if you've put Shell above Cloth in the modifier stack. Gonna need to see some screenshots to tell what's going on.
