rigging a robots arms
show user profile  aniworld
I have a cute little robot character brought from turbosquid:

I am wondering how to rig his arms and legs without forcing him to have knees and elbows?

I'd like to create a simple but flexible rig possibly with some stretch that will create a curved bend?
hope that makes sense?

any advice or direction to a good tut would be greatly appreciated :)

Personally I would rig him with bones, applying 100% weightings to the relevant elements, then use a spline-IK solver for translating the movement along his arms and legs.

Someone with more experience/time could be more helpful to you, but search the F1 files and youtube for what I mentioned.

Thanks Liondebt,
i have been googling around and a spline IK/ bone rig seems to be the way to go,

I found this that might be of interest to others:

Here is a simplified version of just the bendy arm itself:

This is the best way i have found to do it:

although i find in 3ds 2013 when using the skin option the end controller doesn't seem to work?
i found his video on vimeo which guides you through step by step and i just built it myself, working like a dream!
