Maxunderground news unavailable

Max 'not responding' constansly for short periods

I'm working with Max 2016 and V-Ray 3.3 on a 24 thread machine with 64GB of RAM and a Quadro 4000 card, in a scene with 15k polygons. But Max hangs for a few seconds almost every time I do something, like change the length of a plane, or move a window, or open the material editor.

Could this be a driver issue with the graphics card, or do you have any other idea of what it might be?

Disconnect ur network adapter (or pull out ethernet cable). Does it still lag? If so u have a large texture in ur scene whoch might be animated or drawing constantly from network.

Interesting tip, I'll keep that in mind. But I'm currently working locally on the C drive, and there is 286GB of free space on it.

I've updated the graphics drivers, and the situation is... 'less bad' now. So a step in the right direction at least.

try running these lines in the maxscript thing:

gc() - force a garbage collect
freescenebitmaps() - cleans up texture memory
clearUndoBuffer() - be warned though, this will remove all your Undo steps.

Without knowing more about your scene it's hard to say exactly what's causing the hangs.

How many individual objects are there in the scene?

If it is just a few, try importing them one by one into a new scene - sometimes fucky geometry has been giving me insane memory usage and as soon as I sort out (delete + rebuild) the problem area max goes back to playing nicely.

Lion, gc() is done automatically by max. Though it's worth a try.
Nanne, try to see if all your bitmaps are correctly linked. Either with "bitmap/photometric paths" or relink bitmaps.
