Rendering Isolated geometry with Occluded Geometry
show user profile  Herbie
say I want to render a sphere in a crowded scene. I just want to tweak the sphere texture without rendering the entire scene again. The only problem is that there are a few objects in front of it.

So the question is how do I render the sphere with the foreground hiding the parts of the sphere?

render the sphere as you would normally on its own. then render the scene with the sphere being bright self illuminated white, with no gloss or spec. and everything else in the scene black illuminated, etc.

your render will look completely black, minus the bits of the ball you can see which is white.

when you composite use that as a mask
