Rendering HLSL?
show user profile  Dejitarujin
Just a quick question, certainly not to this point yet ;)

Is it possible to use HLSL shaders at render time? FinalRender doesn't have any built-in material programming that I'm aware of, and I would very much like to use some trippy effects that can only be created with such programming.

Bump?

Apparently, my question is either incredibly retarded, or so ingenius no one's ever tried it before :P

You'd probably have to translate them somehow.

I think you might be able to in the new 2010. I can't recall.

There is no reason in theory why HLSL like shaders could not be intergrated into a ray-tracer pipeline.

I don't know if anyone has ever written such a ray tracer, though some of the high end solutions go way beyond what HLSL is capable of so, it's a theoretical possibility.

How about : https://renderman.pixar.com/products/whatsrenderman/index.htm

Well, using a different renderer would kind of defeat the purpose. I already know of renderers that support shader programming; I desire a renderer-independent solution, specifically using the HLSL language because it's so common with so many resources.
