Renderers that do anime style renders?

All renderers? Surely this is more of a material set-up than a render system? By which I mean, if a render system does it by default, or just does it well... it would be using a clever material, nón?

Scanline / ink'n'paint material
mental ray ink'n'paint or contour shader

They can all work well. I've used Illustrate! quite a bit in the past, I think it's pretty good.

Use a falloff map for the specular and make it increment in steps (2 or 3). If you want a black border, add a noise map to the diffuse (I think) and change both it's output colours to black.

I did this on my butler:

Thanks for the input guys but I think Illustrator should be worth it. I'll doenload the free trial first.

Btw, does Illustrator have its own materials?
