render is turning out solid black each time regardless of materials!
show user profile  WellsDawg
when rendering with mental ray, with either ink and paint materials or a mixture of mray and standard materials, every time it processes the render it renders solid black apart from the background which is the color i assigned to it (white).

an error message comes up saying;

'PHEN 0.4 A ray encountered an invalid color (NaN), using black instead'.

i have tried changing all of the exposure controls. ive rendered with and without atmospherics, effects and displacement and tried rendering in ortho and perspective, with and without a camera (as i know some people say that mray works better with a camera).

any help and advice would be much appreciated!

I'll only suggest it since you didn't list it: lights?

Else, check that your faces aren't inverted.

NaN is short for "Not a number" (or at least it is in javascript world).... It sounds like a setting somewhere might be invalid (a string instead of an int or float).

Boom, I'm like a multidimensional array right now.

Here's what I'd do assuming that it's not an exposure problem.

Select all the objects in the scene and assign an A&D material. Render the scene. If the error has gone away, it's a material issue. You can then work out which material is causing it, if it is a material issue. I'd get rid of the standard materials to start with and see if that fixes it.

If that's not the problem, tell us about your lights.
