Need to render scene in one go, not separate images....
Anyone know of a way (panorama is just a 6 render skybox generator) to do this? Perhaps a spherical rendering solution or similar...? I'm trying to render out this volumetric cloud approach I found, but Discreet or Blur (no idea which) has ignored passing the "lock noise to world coords." function into a volumetric light projecting the shader. PLEASE let me know on this. I'll keep hunting around and post if I find anything.
I've found a workaround that allows me to render a skybox of this entire effect. It's got an anomaly though, where the falloff of the light starts to show up as the camera viewpoint becomes more and more acute with greater falloff distance. (sigh) It's always some stupid thing in the way with max when you're out on the edges of the program's abilities...

Not sure if this is what you meant, but in mental ray you can assign WrapAround as the lens shader (Renderer -> Camera Effects -> Camera Shaders -> Lens). Just set the output aspect ratio to 2:1 and you should get a nice 360° image.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to see if this Blur Studios shader and volume light projecting works with mental ray.
