Render's black?
show user profile  CorruptDemon
Alright so i'm really confused about this part. I made a video on what the problem is. http://media.putfile.com/Help-plz-
(Note) I'm trying to use mental ray to render stuff.

When ever i render with a light or something it's always black. No shading just all black. I started 3ds max and then recorded what i did. I didn't change anything you didn't see besides making the screen bigger.

Did you use a Mental Ray light, or just a standard one?

umm, i just used a standard one. There is a special light for mental ray? if so i'd be very happy if you could fill me in. I'm new to 3ds max.

P.S If you watch the video you'll see exactly what i did.

Does your omni light have any multiplier strength? ie:

Also, for the record... I don't know if skylights work in Mental Ray anyway.. BUT, they definitely don't work if you don't activate the light tracer, it also doesn't matter where it's positioned or how it's orientated... was kinda funny watching you move/rotate it around... it doesn't make any difference! It's a SKYlight! :)

You are using a preset and your not seeing all the changes it makes.

Press the "8" key and under the Environment tab change "Exposure Control" to "no exposure control" then try to render again.

I would not use those presets, i think you may have switched to a preset than disabled something or other.

If you are going to play around with Mental Ray I would suggest actually learning what the settings do, and not use presets.

Instead of using the preset go to Common, Assign Render > Production > Mental Ray Render

and enable Final Gather and GI manually.

@jimboliah: When i do that option it renders but some reason it looks like it just renders with the normal renderer.

@dave: that thing had no effect on it no matter what i changed it to.

If someone could give me a preset that works good I'm sure i could work off that :)
(Or just show me some good settings)

No, that's your problem. Stop using presets and go learn basic manual Mental Ray setups. It's pretty obvious you can't trouble shoot the included presets so someone giving you a "working" preset isn't going to help you.

There's even a tutorial inside of 3DS Studio max that walks you through a basic Mental Ray setup.

@Kajico: I've been having this problem without knowing how to fix it for a while now (maybe 2 months) And i posted here because I've tried fixing it myself but can't figure it out (Yes I've used Google). I'm not all that familiar with 3ds max. Okay, here. Here's a image i took of my settings on what it shows it renders with. I started 3ds max and looked at these settings. Does this mean that it's rendering with MR?

Go into the manual.
Look up rendering.
Or look at the display interface information.

You can quite easily change the assigned renderer (which is currently Mental Ray) to MAX Scanline.

Honestly, there is such a large amount of very introductory knowledge missing from your skillset, that at this time you should go back and learn the basics of the interface and such before going further with modelling/lighting....etc...etc.

You will do much better.
You may think that "oh, if only I get help on this, then everything will be fine"....but their will be a million obstacles like this you will run into! You must learn the basics.
AND the provided tutorials and manual..etc..etc...has ALL the info you need!...No need to google at all.

Best of luck

See that area circled in red, that is the assigned renderer. Which is set to Mental Ray. However the problem that you are having goes beyond that simple little change.

Your problem could be in the multitude of other mental ray settings.

If you click on the box where I highlighted it in Green you can switch between Mental Ray and Max Scanline Renderer.

This is why you should start from the basics, because you don't even know the differences in assigning renderers.
