Press F10, then select "Selected " from the drop down labeled "Area to Render" in the upper left corner of the render frame window.

You can also set up Layers using the "Manage Layers" button found on the top shelf next to the "Mirror" and "Align" buttons. Once Layers are set up you can toggle them on or off to render/show only element sin the scene you need.

Good Luck!

ccampbell- I think he means render passes/elements.

Yossioren- Not to my knowledge. One way or another you are going to need to render out a beauty pass too (I don't think you can just render out an Alpha or other elements by themselves).

That being said, I think there are quicker ways to get the layers while rendering. Such as turning off GI, and the quality of your renders (only quality alpha or masking layer cares about is anti-aliasing)..

But lowering the quality will affect some passes (probably any pass that isn't used for masking one way or another).

Hope that helps.

Edit: Actually I do not know exactly what the OP means. Seems to use elements vs passes (not interchangeably)... So yeah, you might be right ccampbell... haha.
