Render with Black Background
show user profile  Landia
Hello. I have a quick question about 3DS Max 2016 with the lates V-ray version.

When I render with V-ray, I just see the object but the background is all black with no light. I found this 3D model online and wanted to see how v-ray render this model but all I see is the object which look great but the background is all black.

Thanks for any advice!

You have a few options here. You can either go into the "Environment" area of the vray settings and apply an environment or a solid color OR you can create a dome light, make sure it's not invisible and render that out in your scene.

Usually the dome light is used with an HDRI Pano (either of an image or generated on the computer). Also be aware that with the dome light you have a "spherical" option for by default it's only a hemisphere like projection.

Thanks for help! But the 3D model I got it suppose to have all the lighting configured.

Here is where I got the 3D model from this website and you can download it for free:

I put this model in my Desktop. Does it matter where the 3D model is located? Or does it need to be in a specific location? Also, does it matter what version of 3DS max and V-ray version? Maybe I am seeing the black background because I am not using the correct 3DS Max and V-ray version.

"Studio Setup not included"

Looks like you need to pay £10 for the lighting :/

Search google for "vray hdri"

Ahh! That is why the background is all black. LOL!

I am still getting the black background when I render the scene. There might be something wrong with my settings. If you like, I can send you a zip file with the 3D model I am looking at. It's about 20 MB in size. My email is:

What is your scene setup ? Post images of your settings and what your looking at, could just be you have your light set to "invisible"....uncheck it.

Like 9krausec said, just put in a dome light, add a hdri to the lights texture slot, and make sure it's not set to "invisible", if it is you will see a black background, If you want the full hdri showing in the background check "Spherical (full dome).

These really are very basic lighting issues, there's a gazzilion tuts out there, work your way through a couple and you'll be up and running in no time ;)
