Render Artifacts in AE
show user profile  9krausec
In after effects what would cause this sort of banding shown below?

32bit comp
24 fps

Artifacts only happen when I attempt to render out comp with alpha AND post DOF effect. If I render out with DOF effect turned off it renders fine, if I render without alpha (solid BG) and DOF on it renders fine.

Both of those together it glitches out and I don't know why. Right now the solution is going to be render out alpha channel and RGB separate with DOF on each (to not have alpha baked in).

Anyone have any ideas as to why this would be happening in AE CC 2017? Is it a bug or user error? Thanks.

Are you using MediaEncoder or straight from AE? There is a known bug that's been around for over a year now that causes flickering and messed up frames occasionally. Also a repeating audio glitch ( repeats the last second of audio in any rendered sequence ). There is no cure afaik, but there are some workarounds that may or may not work. I'm convinced it's related to the gpu in some way. This might be something a bit different, but does sound like a bug/glitch..

Media encoder! If that is buggy please let me know and I will not use it anymore when outputting image sequences (this time the output is a 32 bit tif sequence).

I liked being able to queue and continue working. Oh well, stupid bugs.

Trying the same export directly from AE now to see if there is a difference. So far so good.

UPDATE: Same results. Still getting bullshit artifacts. So happy I requested Nuke get put into the budget this year.

That's a real pita mate. I've had to apologise to clients more than once for delays caused by AE/MediaEncoder repeatedly failing to render a clean final output. Adobe seem complacent about it, can't believe some of these issues have persisted for so long..

Maybe try a different file format if you haven't already, possibly an uncompressed format and then convert..

Same jam with openEXR too. What is this, Bush league? Oh well. Too bad Natron doesn't have support for deep compositing or Alembic import or I'd jump on it.

A workaround could be to render out the alpha pass first and then do a new comp and do only DOF?
Or the other way around perhaps. Whichever gives you the desired result, if at all possible.

yeah. I just rendered out the DOF on a black background and then the BW alpha separate from that. It works as a workaround.

I also don't know why there are multiple folders for Adobe CC now since the last update. 2015 and 2017 folders! Maddening! :D

Maybe to keep track of version dependent content?
Maybe 2017-saves are not compatible with 2015-saves and so on :)

Have you tried ignoring zdepth alpha?

I haven't played around with it since I got what I needed out of it. Hopefully they fix whatever is wrong by the next time I need to do this same thing. Thanks for the replies chaps. Case closed for now.
