Renaming scene bitmaps in max.

I thought this would be easier,

I'm trying to rename the textures on my drive in max whilst retaining links.

I've tried a couple of scripts but they all seem to just rename the materials which I don't need

I thought Universal Renamer was the ideal tool, I'm wanting to remove the first 13 digits of all the file names.

So in a nutshell, this is exactly what I want to do ...

...only I want to rename the files on my drive (keeping the file extension), not the material names.

edit: i thought it might be a permissions issue, but as far as i can tell Universal Renamer can't do this.

It would be cool if asset tracker could monitor changes and update accordingly :/

maybe I'm not understanding the problem. You want to rename the files on your harddrive, as well as in the scene? If the universal renamer works for the files in max, you should be able to rename the files on your harddrive ( ) and then run the universal renamer in max? Does the universal renamer also work on file paths?

No I can use Better File Renamer to rename the files on the drive, but links would be broken in max, file paths in Universal Renamer are in the asset tab, but you can't just remove digits from the file name, it removes digits from the entire path including drive letters.

like i said i thought this would be easier ;)

Hey FX, my tool you are using there :) The Asset and File renaming need more love, I fear. I got many requests to add a rename-file-and-update-paths-accordingly feature and even started implementing it, but then other things came in between. So I know better know and don't promise anything anymore :/ Anyway, in your case a simple search & replace would do what you want: Just search for the melborne2001_ prefix and replace it with nothing, voila.

Try this (first on a bogus scene with just a couple of texture maps):

Note that there's no checking whatsoever (for errors, files actually existing, number of characters to remove no greater than the file name, etc). And there's no UI :))

Hey br0t, I hadn't realized it was your tool, my attention levels are low at the moment ;)

Vast improvement on the standard rename dialogue, but yeah assets and files need some dev.

I did a ton of searching and found a ton of requests for the same rename file retain links thing as your probably aware.

Cheers Garp, yup it works a treat but unforgiving and brutal ;)

You have the scaffolding. Adding the bells and whistles should be easy enough.
