Remote control Buttons...Extreme noob..
show user profile  Mardem
Hi everyone..This is my first post here..I have 3d studio for almost 3 weeks now and went through many tutorials but i haven't finished them all yet.I was dyeing to start to some modeling by my self something simple so i found my tv remote control in front of me and i started.pretty simple for many in here(i keep an eye on this forum for some time now and i saw some amazing stuffs). My question is that..I have done the basic model but the problem i facing is how im gonna do the buttons on it..many of them are not a circle to put a cylinder and them attach it with the basic model, and another thing how i am gonna do that empty thing around the button to put in the button..(i hope someone to understand cause i wrote my question sh**t)..i will be very grateful if someone give me a clear answer ,i really want to do it good.. (i using 3d studio 2009)

thanks very much MARKOID..i will try this..
DUB you are right to but i want to ask if i can meshsmooth only where i want cause their are many sharp corners??

Nice Jing markoid.

Mardem, you'll probably find that you have to remodel your remote with all the correct edges laid out properly, ready to bevel/extrude etc.

Mardem, I just saw your reply up there by accident... if you want to add to the thread just hit the reply button and go for it.

Generally, something like a remote is done as a high poly model, so you would use mesh smooth on the whole model and then chamfer the edges that you want to be more defined or sharper.
If you get stuck doing your model, post a screenshot here of your unsmoothed wireframe and someone will help.
Check the FAQ to see how to post an image... if necessary :)

Here what i do all morning(please who ever see this dont laugh.haha).Some buttons are missing and i still dont finish a few things i have to do to around the model.
This picture is without Meshsmooth
This is with Meshsmooth

1.As anyone can see there are many problems after i put Meshsmooth.Any tip how i fix this or i dont have a chance?
2.Just when i start i use symmetry and now i have problems.
First...The buttons at the right are the correct(The ones for the numbers) but because i use symmetry the others came up like that and i cannot do the middle ones.(Should i rotate them at the end??)
Second..Notice the buttons are all different shapes..After i make the one like i want how can i copy them(i mean the vertex and the edjes)??
3.Any tip how i can make it look better is welcome..

reply with just the image links to post them in the thread.

obviously use http instead of xxxx.

Also, post wireframes, preferably a little closer up. http://www.maxforums.org/thread.aspx?tid=479612

That would be ok if you werent going to apply the smoothing modifier to it. If you want to do that you need to learn to model keep all polygons to 4 sided shapes.

heres a tut for you by Tbonz

A way I favor for those is to start with the buttons, then make the surface out of them. I find it easier to get all quads that way.
Here is a quicky. Sorry it's very different from your model but I recorded it before seeing your last posts.

About the symetry modifier, you don't need to have the middle vertices aligned to the symetry plane. Just make sure they are on the other side. The modifier will slice along its gizmo and make everything whole.

1- your problems with meshsmooth start because your mesh is composed of ngons, which are polys with more than 4 sides- around your buttons that is, the jings weren't just people showing off, they were trying to explain how to produce the geometry you need without making huge flat surfaces without connecting edges which result in max trying to guess where the edges should be and failing miserably causing your mesh errors with smoothing
2- if you add an edit poly modifier on top of the symmetry it'll be a whole model again and you can delete some of the middle polys, select a button in polygon mode and drag it with shift pressed down to make a new button (make element or new object is your choice but you'll have to attach it again if you chose new object)
3- finish modelling then we'll help with the lighting and materials

thanks very much K-tonne..thats were very helpfull..After i show that pictures i understand for meshsmooth i need 4 sides polygons to work..but now i thing its to late to fix that but its ok..thanks again..i dont really mind about the lighting and material because i havent done the turorials or anything yet...maybe some time later..

So as i now know that meshsmooth need 4 polygons to work..is any other option just to soften the edjes a little??

there's chamfer which is in edge mode
select an edge or better to select an edge then press 'loop' and chamfer as it'll be less cleanup in the long run- i believe it's location and usage is demonstrated in the jings above
