Im trying to put a reference picture of a car onto a plane so i can start to make a 3d model, but the software isnt regonising the file. Its a .tif file, ive tried to convert it to jpg and it dosnt regonise that either. Any help on what to do would be appreciated

How did you convert it to jpg? you didnt just change the extension did you? there's no reason why it wouldn't recognise a jpg

depends what you want to do with it.

if you want to add it in the material editor to apply to an object, that object needs mapping co-ordinates before the texture shows up. or if you want it as a background just stick it in the environment channel for example.

Right im guessing your not that up on how max works rather than the image not being accepted. Is it just that the image isnt showing in the viewport? if so you most likely have to click this button in the material editor...

when i go to get the material, im going to mtl library, then file open, then in the following box that opens it only giving me these type of files to open: .mat .max .drf and .chr

Ahhh you're not even THAT far yet.
you dont do that.

you click an empty grey sphere, then click the grey box next to 'diffuse' then choose 'bitmap' then select
your image, then click the button that applies the material to the object

then hit F1 and look up the material editor, and read up on it. these are the most basic questions you could possibly be asking and the help files will answer them all

lol, absolutely. learn the basics via the instruction manual first.
