Recommended painting program?
show user profile  Glitcher
I haven't started painting meshes yet, but I'd like to know which program you would recommend for the job (I'll be doing characters mostly). What's the most popular one available?

I think the two heavies are zbrush and mudbox
i would demo both and then decide which way to go.

mudbox only sculpts- doesn't paint
there's a free photoshop app called cs3 extended floating around if you can find that- it's a stripped down version of cs3 but it'll be upto the job of texturing stuff

[edit] might mean prog rather than app- it's a standalone though (cs3 extended) and ok for doing textures but not sure about the 3d capabilities at all

ummm isn't photoshop extended, an extended version of photoshop? And in fact not a plugin, but a different version with some pretty dodgy 3d stuff.

Anyway this thread is weird -

Do you mean painting 2d textures?
Painting textures onto 3d geometry?
Sculpting in 3d?
Painting concept 2d things?

CS3 Extended is 300 more than regular plane jane Photoshop. It's quite useful if you are dealing with measuring from photos and.... well read all about it on the Adobe website. As reeves said, the 3d stuff is questionable.

Maybe he meant Photoshop elements? It comes with scanners sometimes.

??

photoshop cs3 extended portable
it's meant for flash sticks
got it from a link on this site a while ago- can't find the thread now though
search hates...
on google there were loads of results but from 'less reputable suppliers'
but since it was free in the first place there should be no issue with that i guess

Searched Adobes site... I'm pretty sure portable should be spelled with a z and is not legit. My own two cents.

Open Canvas is a cool little free painting tool for 2D (older versions are still free)

And as said before Art rage, is free sex. It's an amazing tool for about 20-30

For higher end, higher priced packages, I think Corel Painter is probably the painting standard but Photoshop stacks up nicely with it as well

For 2.5D - 3D packages, definetely Zbrush as an affordable option.

smells like another hit-n-run but anyway ..
mudbox2 will incorporate the chameleon engine
which is a very nice 3d paint solution, so ive been told
im looking forward to testing it

Sorry, I meant painting textures directly onto 3D meshes. I already have Photoshop and OpenCanvas, but I can only use them to paint flat textures, then map them onto the mesh. I need something where I can paint the textures in real-time on the mesh.
